Midnight Movie - review by Grizzly

"Timmy can fit"

Inspired by Snout’s ability to pop out another review this month I offer the following account of Midnight Movie (imdb).

And it's nice to review something a little more modern for a change.

As a child of the 80's, born and bread on Friday the 13th etc... I'm kinda fascinated by what appears to be a new era of slasher films (Eg: Hatchet, Laid to Rest). To be honest I'm not really into the slasher genre at all anymore but make no mistake - my interest can be maintained by a liberal dose of boob. Sadly Midnight movie fails to deliver on this count, however in terms of an interesting plot-line it's a minor triumph for the genre. As such it's worth a look.

The first act of the film is traditional slasher fare.

Serial killer escapes hospital.

Serial killer traps American teens in a locale (a movie theatre in this case).

Playing in the movie theatre: a-film-within-the-film starring the serial killer and apparently explaining his back story to some extent.

Surprisingly, from here, a genuinely interesting take on the film-within-a-film reality-warp type scenario plays out. Some genuinely interesting concepts are explored relating to the slasher genre itself and the boundary between real-life and imagination. This is something Wes Craven may have come up with circa Scream / I Know What you did Last Summer.

If you are into the slasher you wont be disappointed.

One other thing...

This movie contains a "Timmy".

Above: Timmy. A typical "Timmy". Sourced from the soap opera Passions.

And as you all know: whether it be animals, children, the mentally disabled... I always give extra points for a "Timmy".
